Of myths and men
Columnist James Harkin expressed his opinion piece in The Guardian last year that "Our attempts to create a society gender neutrality have had the unfortunate effect of stripping men of their boldness. The values and activities traditionally associated with masculinity are increasingly ridiculed or pathologised.
It has become popular in our culture to strike men just as men, as if masculinity is in itself 'politically incorrect 'these days and our energies, talents, strengths, fire, passion, unity, sacrifice and dedication are things to be ashamed.
It's not just men who feel this. The feminist writer, Doris Lessing, tells how he visited a class of nine and 10 years old and heard a young teacher to tell children that the reason for wars was the violent nature of men.
"You could see the girls, fat with complacency and conceit "He said," while the boys sat crumpled, apologizing for their existence, thinking this would be the pattern of their lives. This kind of thing that is happening in schools all over the place and nobody says anything. It has become a religion. The most stupid woman, poorly educated and can waste the most unpleasant beautiful, kindest, and most intelligent man and no one protests. Men seem to be so intimidated that they can not defend themselves, and it's time they did. "
Yet, as feminists say, people in positions of power – in the educational system as well as our legal and political systems – tend to be men. It is perhaps – but just maybe – understandable that a woman would be critical of men and the teacher might abuse their power and twist the truth in this way, but almost sure that the head of their school, local education authority, the Department of Education, Board of Governors and the decision of other key people were men. Why none of them stood up to these guys? Why did they allow this teacher to corrupt the truth? In fact, just where are the male champions to challenge injustices how are you?
In children against war, another feminist writer Christina Hoff Sommers comments: "When looking at children at all, is in the context of how to modify their antisocial behavior – that is, how to make girls more … has become fashionable to attribute pathology to millions of men healthy children. "Again, looking at the numbers and while it is clear that more men than women in policy-making functions. If children are being "pathologised" is also by their own gender.
But what the teacher is right? Are men inherently violent? According to several studies (some of whom will find http://www.mankind.org.uk/The% 20A-Z% 20of% 20Dom.pdf), the reality is that a lot, if not more violence of women. One study found that 75% of men were seriously assaulted by their wives, at least once a month. 33% were kicked in the genitals, others were burned, had things thrown at them, or were beaten with heavy objects.
Despite this, if the attack was reported, 21% of the men were arrested and 47% were threatened with arrest. In only 3% of the women attackers were charged with assault, no one was convicted, despite the serious injuries that some of the men suffered. Furthermore, if the male victim brought to court, often denied access to their children as other forms of violence against women by their husbands – and toward that children deprived of a father. Since its shares were generally confirmed by judges ignorant man this is, of course, another example of discrimination against men against men.
Maybe that's why men seem more violent – because women get their way and men, if a report of an attack, tend to be arrested themselves – and why so many men lose contact with their children every year (and then get blamed for that: the myth of the "absent father" and "male insensitive ").
This study is available on http://www.mankind.org.uk/domabus.htm and worth looking at what else is said.
Interpreting men as holders of violence and women as peace is a myth that castrated men, undermining women, perpetuating the idea of 'weak women', and leaves all we live a lie.
THE NEW MENAISSANCE: TIME FOR TRUTH
It's time for a new "Menaissance" Harkin writes: "An era in which we will learn again to glorify real [instead of "mythological"] men "for a new truth and equality between the sexes may arise where nobody has to "win" or "lose", and we respect each other to work for a world that is honest and fair to all.
This Menaissance announce the rebirth of the Holy Men: Men who are proud to be men and be able – and allowed – to integrate the body and mind with emotions and spirit and are not judged by that, either as "weak men" or "sissies", men who, despite the challenges, not to betray to either sex, but to understand its unique place in the web of life.
These "new men" will know the truth and defend what they believe, with love and compassion as guides to action in the knowledge that these are the basic principles of all human beings and no one controls for gender.
Consider the difference that can make the world if men were allowed to embrace these principles, showing how, and to be respected for it instead of "pathologised" and tried in terms of a myth that they are incapable.
The first step in this Menaissance is to restore balance. That could mean challenging our basic assumptions and the search for the truth behind the myths and stereotypes – such as the myth that permeates all of the goddess who has become so popular in our culture that says that women are gentle, caring, fragile, helpless creatures that men love and are there to protect them – when not being violent towards them.
Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, for example, is one of the archetypes often used and whose qualities of women are encouraged to adopt and men are said to accept. What is rarely taught, however, is the origin of "froth arisen" Aphrodite was born when his father's penis, was launched at sea and whose waves Aphrodite emerged. In symbolic terms, the sea is the vagina, the waters of life, and the myth of Aphrodite, so says the men are the creators from the first action was the penis entering the sea. On a more prosaic and equally we could put it this way: that women are nothing without men (and vice versa). We are equal (or should be!) and we need each other for our species to survive.
The next stage is for men to rediscover their own gods and heroes: people can look up to, whose qualities can hug, and it will not deliver for talking about life and its truths. The mythologist Joseph Campbell wrote in the Hero with a Thousand Faces is the journey of a hero in every person, who acts as his initiation into adulthood: "A hero of companies in the world of day etc. common in a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to grant favors to his fellow man. "
The route is a series of measures to:
1. A "call to adventure, the hero must accept or reject
2. A "road test" in which the hero succeeds or fails
3. Achieving the goal or the "gift" resulting in new awareness and knowledge
4. A "return to the real world," and finally,
5. The "request for the blessing "- The gift of sight of the hero has won – to improve the world around
In clear terms: men must decide to act, to fend for themselves, to explore their truths, to meet the challenges of being a man – and to challenge others who deny their journey through the perpetuation of myths that they cowed.
Those who accept the challenge will have trials and tests of character and determination, but if they pass they will achieve new skills, strengths, and the depths understanding. You can then return to their lives with a new sense of who they are and their importance for the world. And then, for the benefit of us all that can shine as the men who uphold justice, order, balance, and truth.
The battle cry of the Knights Templar was "to be glorious," and this is what it means to be a real man: to be all we can and do everything we can to bring peace to us and to this troubled world. It is also the mark of a hero.
